An Earth Leakage Relay (ELR) is a safety device used to detect small stray voltages on the metal enclosures on a variety of electrical equipment such as motors, HVAC units, welding machines, commercial ovens, portable equipment, etc. If a fault occurs—such as a breakdown in insulation—leakage current can flow to earth. The ELR identifies this and quickly disconnects the power to prevent:

How Does an Earth Leakage Relay Work?
Every ELR requires a core balance current transformer (CBCT) also known as a zero current transformer (ZCT) or Toroid. These are similar to a CT, are available in different sizes and are selected according to the circuit rating – usually in amps. In simple terms, the CBCT continuously monitors the balance of current between the live conductors (typically phase and neutral) of an electrical system.
Basic Operating Principle:
Balanced Condition:

- Under normal operation, the current flowing into a system via the phase conductor(s) equals the current flowing out via the neutral
- The sum of these currents is zero → no leakage → no trip
Leakage Condition:

- If there’s a fault (e.g., insulation failure or accidental contact with a live conductor), some current may “leak” to earth
- The CBCT detects a difference between the incoming and outgoing currents
- When this difference exceeds a set threshold (e.g., 30mA, 100mA ), the relay within the ELR triggers
Tripping:

- The relay activates its output contacts
- These contacts can be used to trip a circuit breaker, isolate power or trigger an alarm

- Adjustable Sensitivity: Sets the leakage current threshold depending on application (e.g. 30mA for personal protection, higher for equipment to protect against fires e.g. 100mA or 300mA)
- Time Delay Option: Prevent nuisance tripping from transient leakage currents during switching events and also serves as a means of discriminating between several ELRs depending on where positioned in the circuit
- LED Indicators: Show status (healthy, fault, tripped) at a glance
- Test & Reset Functions: Allow manual operation and system reset after a trip
